What is “Flat Creek 2040?”

In many ways, Flat Creek, as it flows through Montreat and Black Mountain and into the Swannanoa River of Western North Carolina, serves as a model for citizen and scientist engagement and cooperation to maintain high quality habitats, waters and aquatic species. Flat Creek provides numerous valued benefits, such as fishing, creekside housing, places for fun and meditation, among others.

In this setting the mission of the “Flat Creek 2024” project is to foster awareness, understanding and engagement with Flat Creek and its watershed on the part of researchers, community members and officials, educators. We do this by promoting rigorous partnerships, networking, study and planning that contribute to continued high quality waters, habitats, and their ecosystem services.

The Flat Creek Setting

At six miles in length, Flat Creek represents a tiny fraction of all the mountain streams in western North Carolina in the southern Appalachian Mountains. That said, it receives a disproportionately large amount of attention from people who value it greatly. Historically the creek and its watershed have provided places for settlement, agriculture, forestry and recreation. In the past decade, citizens have joined with scientists and educators to establish research on the quality of water, ecology and habitats of its inhabitants, and restoration of species such as Eastern Brook Trout and Hellbender salamanders. Planning for stormwater management and the increasing number of intense rainfall events has been done.

An example of public sentiment for the health of Flat Creek is contained in a survey done in Montreat, whereby the two highest concerns were for “health of Flat Creek” and “stormwater and flooding.”

Flat Creek as a model for conservation

In the past decade momentum has built to better understand the Flat Creek ecosystem and how humans interact with it and thereby enact activities that will sustain its high level of environmental quality. In short, the several projects undertaken have put the creek on the map, as indicated by the following list of project titles recently completed or currently underway:

Establishment of Flat Creek 2040

As a means of enhancing and expanding scientific and community efforts on behalf of the long-term health of Flat Creek, the Flat Creek 2040 project was established in 2024. The idea for it was conceived in mid-2024 by four local scientists and educators, who formed an informal and independent planning team to organize a workshop of all technical parties working on the creek and its watershed in some fashion. Thus, the “Flat Creek 2040 Science Working Group” convened on May 9, 2025 for a full-day series of presentations, discussions, and networking to compile, for the first time ever, all the known scientific, educational and management information pertinent to Flat Creek. This significant exchange yielded lasting cooperation among key individuals and organizations. Subsequently, the planning team continues to seek opportunities to secure funding and develop new or expanded projects concerning the long-term sustainability of Flat Creek.
Most of the projects listed above are conducted and funded independently of Flat Creek 2040. In a few cases we have secured support. Our main role is to build coordination among projects, help find funds as possible, and particularly tell the story of why Flat Creek is such a special place, a “shining star” in the words of one scientist.
